Washington DC

In October of 2012, I ran the Marine Corps Marathon. It was the hardest (and last) full marathon I have ever ran. I loved the city, loved the route, but disliked the way I felt during and after the race. My knees hurt, my body ached and my brain was literally telling me I was done.

I knew at about mile 18 that it would be my very last full marathon and it was. Some runners have said they experienced the same thing. When you know, you just know. I have never regretted not signing up for another 26.2. Half marathons have kept me trained, satisfied and healthy. I am grateful to have ran this race, but proud to say it was my 6th and last full marathon.

I did all the touristy things in DC and enjoyed it. I was alone on this trip, but I think sometimes, its easier to see and do more when you can go at your own pace. Not that I don’t love traveling with my family or friends, but this time, it was nice. My hotel was across from the Pentagon very close to the start line and unfortunately several miles from the finish.

The trees were beautiful in the fall and the weather was perfect. Well…..expect for Hurricane Sandy that tormented the
northeast coast the day after the race on October 29th. Flights were cancelled and I was forced to rent a mini van with a couple I new from Lakeland and make the 19 hour trek home in time to spend Halloween with my kids. Probably another sign it was my last marathon.

Sadly, the only meal I remember eating was at the W, I remember sitting outside having a couple drinks and an appetizer and thinking how fun it was to be having lunch while looking at the White House.

I am looking forward to taking my kids to DC and giving them a remarkable history lesson! Maybe when I return, I will be able to share better places to eat and shop!
