Running

Savannah | Georgia

I have been to Savannah, the oldest city in Georgia several dozen times. I have ran a few half marathons, went with friends and took my family. There is so much to see, do and eat! Each time we go, I try a new restaurant, visit a new place and walk down different streets. Savannah’s history is rich and the streets are lined with wonderful stories.

We’ve taken more trolley tours than I can count and several horse and carriage rides. It’s a great way to take a break from walking and learn as much about the city as you can in a short amount of time.

The Rock n Roll series hosts the half marathons and always put on a great race. Very well organized. I’ve run 3 of their races and enjoyed the route. The weather is always iffy. Two years we had very hot weather, one year extremely cold. Unpredictable, like Florida, but a nice race to run that’s somewhat close to home.

Some of my favorite places to eat are Vic’s on the River, The Olde Pink House (the best flounder you’ll ever eat), Soho South Cafe for lunch, The Six Pence, Savannah Bee Company for hot tea, Leopold’s for ice-cream, Jen’s Place for homemade martini’s, cocktails at Rocks not the Roof, The Pirate House for fun (not the food) for the kiddos and River Street Candy Store for the kids…

I really enjoyed exploring the Bonaventure Cemetery, where Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’s Bird Girl Statue was located. It was an interestingly unique experience. Also outside of downtown is the Wormsloe Historic site and a must see if you’re in the area. The trees like the dirt road and makes for beautiful pictures. The City of Savannah has 22 “squares” in the center of the city. Probably the most popular is Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump sat on the infamous bench and told his life story. Although, the bench is no longer there, it’s fun to imagine being where this classic movie was filmed. So many other movies were filmed in this city (the pajama scene in Something to Talk About starring Julia Roberts was filmed at The Six Pence restaurant mentioned above). I always enjoy visiting some of these spots when I am in town. We will be back in Savannah this fall and I hope to explore some places I haven’t been.
